A Story of Resilience: How a Dog Battling a Massive Tumor Found a New Lease on Life

Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue in New Mexico recently took in a dog that had been left at a shelter where animals are put down. The staff was shocked when they saw the poor dog with a large tumor. Despite having seen many difficult cases before, this one left them speechless.

When he was rescued, the Weimaraner named Gilbert Grape was struggling to walk because of the massive tumor that weighed him down. His previous medical history remains a mystery, as it is unclear how he managed to survive for so long without any medical attention.

The person in question was given medication to alleviate the pain, as well as antibiotics and an IV catheter. Various tests were conducted, including an ultrasound and an analysis of blood and urine samples. In addition, a blood transfusion was deemed necessary. Upon receiving the patient, veterinarians were informed about the presence of a tumor.

The Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue facility was faced with a tough decision regarding Gilbert’s health. They could either conduct surgery or put him down to end his pain. However, they chose the former and managed to raise £4,300 through charity efforts to cover the costs. Gilbert underwent life-saving surgery, and today he is a happy dog with his new owner, Scott Roberts. Despite losing a lot of muscle due to the 12lb benign tumor, Gilbert has regained his strength over time.

In this area, there is a program that allows approved national rescues to take in animals with medical clearance. However, the local shelter holds onto stray animals for 72 hours without screening them to give owners a chance to reclaim their pets. Gilbert underwent an amazing transformation after having a tumor removed. To save his life, he needed blood transfusions and an IV catheter during his treatment. Following months of physical therapy to regain lost muscle mass, Gilbert was adopted by Scott who provided him with a new home and a fresh start. It’s worth noting that Gilbert’s rescue occurred in 2013, and since then, the Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue has continued to do excellent work rescuing dogs with special needs, terminal illnesses, or those in need of a helping hand like Gilbert.
